I used to sell advertising in firearms magazines. Then I became a teacher. Other teachers asked me what I did for a living before I was in school…pause…hmmm…do I tell them? Usually it depended on my relationship with the person, and what kind of school I was teaching in. You can imagine how some of those conversations went in the faculty lounge…and how many of them just didn’t happen! The words “guns and school” are tricky to combine these days… especially in Colorado.
I taught American Literature. I was required to teach a portion of the Declaration of Independence as a California state standard for 11th grade – I taught the whole thing; not just the bits and pieces out of context. And I told my students about my old job. I told them that I liked guns.
But more than my love of firearms, is the love of my liberty. Owning a gun is just one way that our forefathers guaranteed protection from a tyrannical government. And owning a gun is a way of protecting my domicile. If I am not at liberty to protect my family and defend myself, than I believe I am making myself vulnerable to victimhood. And I refuse to be a victim. I also refuse to be the victim of a tyrannical government, who might decide to pick bits and pieces of the Constitution apart – hey, they have already decided what bits and pieces of the Declaration to discard within the classroom…
No matter where you stand on the Gun Rights issue, it’s hard to argue against the fact that “Gun Control” is one way for our overreaching government to control it’s citizens. There is nothing to fear from a law-abiding citizen keeping a gun in his home, or carrying a gun in public; in fact, you might actually want him to be the person sitting next to you in a dark movie theater.
According to Dr. Gary Kleck, criminologist at Florida State University in Tallahassee and author of “Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America,” a book used by many in the gun debate, 800,000-2,500,000 crimes are stopped by guns each year.
Laws don’t stop crazy behavior; but a good person with a gun can usually stop a crazy person. Because let’s face it, a criminal doesn’t care what ‘gun laws’ are passed…because. they. are. lawless!
Our neighbors to the North enjoy a lot of the freedoms and liberties that we do; but Canada warns the US – they’re coming for more than just your guns! This video from Sun News shows how slippery the slope can be when we allow ANY of our liberties to be infringed upon…
